The Power Of Attention

RIDING THE WILD HORSES OF THE MIND TO LIBERATION"Mindfulness."It is a word much bandied about when one first starts reading about meditation and Buddhism. What is mindfulness? How does it work? Why is it important? Words can never do justice to the actual experience of something, and mindfulness is a prime example. Yet it is possible to sketch the quality of attention that leads to mindfulness and the concentration and insights that can result from a calm, focused, observant mind.By Ajahn Amaro…See More

Spiritual Life and Daily Life

Many people have the misconception that spiritual life or religious life is somewhere up there in the sky -- an ethereal or mystical reality -- and that our everyday life is too mundane and not so nice. Often people think that to be a spiritual person, we must ignore or neglect our everyday life, and go into another, special realm. Actually, I think being a spiritual person means becoming a real human being.… Continue

What is karma?

Posted on January 17, 2010 at 7:03pm 1 Comment

Karma is one of the most important concepts in Buddhism. Karma is an imprint in one's Mind. When one performs a good deed out of good intentions, the good intentions come from the Mind. Having done that good deed, the residues of these intentions stay in one's Mind as "imprints", and that is "good karma". The opposite goes for evil deeds (or what the Buddha would call "unwholesome deeds") done out of greed, hatred etc.

A person's karma affects a person in 2 ways. The first is his… Continue

Let it go: lesson from Buddhism

By Jt Knoll, The Morning Sun, Jan 27, 2008

Pittsburg, Kansas (USA) -- As I knew I was in for a long day on the road before I left on a trip one morning last week — Pittsburg to Kansas City to Newton and back to Pittsburg — I took along a set of audiocassette tapes from The Teaching Company on Buddhism.

It's a religion (some call it a philosophy) that holds that a state of enlightenment can be attained by… Continue

The rise and fall of happiness

by SN Goenka, Bangkok Post, April 24. 2005

Bangkok, Thailand -- The real cause of suffering, says meditation master S.N. GOENKA , is the reaction of the mind that forms the mental habit of insatiable longing for what is not - and irremediable dissatisfaction with what is.

The real world bears no resemblance to the world of fairy tales in which everyone lives happily ever after. We cannot avoid the… Continue

Mumbai, India -- A SRI Lankan monk was in a crowded train travelling from Mumbai to Ulhasnagar in India, in 1982. A couple of superior caste members were seated comfortably, while several labourers were standing nearby. When a labourer accidentally brushed against a woman’s shoulders, the husband took offence and… Continue
